Senior Cloud Platform Engineer
Kia ora!
At Air New Zealand, we are driven by innovation, collaboration, and a passion for excellence. We’re seeking a talented Cloud Platform Engineer to join our team and play a key role in shaping the future of our cloud infrastructure, specifically on Google Cloud Platform (GCP). This is an exciting opportunity to help move us towards platform engineering practices while contributing to key digital initiatives of Google Cloud adoption across one of the world’s leading airlines.
As a Cloud Platform Engineer at Air New Zealand, you will drive the development and evolution of our cloud platform, with a focus on Google Cloud and awareness of the broader Google ecosystem. You’ll help shape the strategic direction and governance of this new cloud service, ensuring it aligns with business needs and operational best practices. In this role, you will provide technical leadership, collaborate across teams, and actively contribute to improving the developer experience and delivering measurable business value.
The role you will play:
- Collaborate with peers to develop and execute the strategy for Air New Zealand’s cloud platform portfolio, focusing on Google Cloud with an opportunity to expand skills across AWS and Azure services.
- Define and drive the product roadmap, prioritising initiatives to align with business objectives and user needs.
- Support a cross-functional team of architects, engineers, and specialists by providing subject matter expertise and technical guidance.
- Promote a self-service model to reduce operational overhead and enhance the developer experience.
- Champion DevOps and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) practices to enable continuous delivery and maintain high operational standards.
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the cloud platform, ensuring availability, security, and performance around the clock.
- Enable effective FinOps practices by promoting cost transparency and operational efficiency across cloud services.
- Manage third-party vendors and maintain strategic relationships with cloud providers and systems integrators.
- Continuously enhance the platform by balancing operational priorities with customer-focused innovation.
What you will bring to this role
To succeed in this role, you will bring a mix of technical expertise, leadership skills, and a strategic mindset. You’ll be comfortable working with complex cloud environments and have a strong track record of managing cloud infrastructure in GCP with some exposure to AWS or Azure. You’ll have a collaborative approach, working closely with internal teams and external partners to deliver results.
We’re looking for strong engineering talent with:
- 5+ years of experience in cloud platform engineering, with deep expertise in GCP and solid working knowledge of AWS or Azure.
- Proven experience applying cloud governance frameworks and delivering technical excellence within enterprise cloud environments.
- Strong background in DevOps and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), including hands-on work with CI/CD, automation, and infrastructure-as-code.
- Demonstrated ability to contribute to and foster a high-performance team culture, collaborating effectively across diverse teams.
- Practical experience with cloud FinOps, driving cost-optimised strategies and promoting financial accountability.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, business-relevant language.
- Strong relationship management capabilities, able to navigate cross-functional dynamics and balance competing priorities.
- Solid understanding of risk, compliance, and operational governance in cloud environments.

- An opportunity to influence the future of cloud services at Air New Zealand and play a key role in transforming our technology landscape.
- A dynamic, future-focused environment that values innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Ongoing professional development and learning opportunities to support your career growth and personal development.
- A competitive salary and benefits package, with the chance to make a meaningful impact within a globally recognised organisation.
