The Air New Zealand Academy of Learning's Level 3 pre-employment programme is a practical, hands-on pathway for people interested in pursuing a career in aeronautical engineering. The programme leads to the New Zealand Certificate in Aeronautical Engineering (Pre-Employment Skills) (Level 3) and is designed to help learners build foundational knowledge, practical skills, and confidence for future training, qualifications, and opportunities across the aviation industry. This programme is suited to people who enjoy problem-solving, working with their hands, and learning in a practical environment.

Successful participants who achieve the qualification may choose to explore opportunities across the aviation industry, including but not limited to Air New Zealand. Completion of the programme does not guarantee employment with Air New Zealand or any specific employer.

It supports learners to develop the foundation knowledge, study habits, and practical understanding needed for further training or entry-level opportunities in the aviation engineering sector.

Programme information

Academy of Learning entry requirements

  • 17 years or older at the start of the programme
  • Have the right to study in New Zealand, where applicable
  • Preferred minimum academic requirements
    • Maths, Physics (NCEA Level 2)
    • English (NCEA Level 1)
  • Strong interest in aviation, aircraft maintenance, engineering, or technical trades
  • Student must be able to meet the programme's attendance, safety, and practical learning expectations

Programme Structure & Assessment

This programme combines theory-based learning, practical activities, and assessment to help learners build foundational knowledge and skills for aeronautical engineering environments. Learners will develop knowledge across aircraft maintenance practices, engineering tools and equipment, aircraft systems, maintenance documentation, safe work practices, human factors, and aviation workplace expectations.

The programme is delivered over 36 weeks, across a 39-week period that includes semester breaks (the amount and duration can vary). Learners complete assessments throughout the programme to confirm they have met the required learning outcomes. Assessment may include written or theory-based assessments, practical activities, and other evidence required to demonstrate knowledge and skills.


Qualification Outcome

Successful participants will achieve the New Zealand Certificate in Aeronautical Engineering (Pre-Employment Skills) (Level 3).

This nationally recognised qualification confirms that successful participants have developed foundational knowledge and skills for aeronautical engineering environments. This includes safe work practices, maintenance documentation, aeronautical engineering tools and equipment, aircraft systems, human factors, and current industry practices.

Completion of the programme does not guarantee employment with any specific employer.

Successful participants may choose to explore pathways in areas such as aircraft maintenance, aeronautical engineering, aviation support, aircraft manufacturing or maintenance environments, and further specialist training.

Air New Zealand is one of many aviation-sector employers that successful participants may choose to consider after completing the programme. Employment opportunities are not guaranteed and any recruitment process is managed separately by the relevant employer.

Fees

Programme fees are confirmed before each intake. Indicative fees for 2027 are $12,637.00, plus approximately $500 course-related costs. StudyLink support may be available, subject to eligibility.

Refund and withdrawal information will be provided before enrolment, including relevant dates, refund conditions, and withdrawal processes. Applicants are encouraged to review this information carefully before accepting a place in the programme.
