Aviation Operations, Safety & Human Factors
Explore aviation legislation, maintenance procedures, quality systems, aircraft servicing, ground handling, human factors and professional engineering practices that keep aircraft operating safely and efficiently.
Engineering Skills & Workshop Practice
Build practical engineering capability using aircraft tools, publications and maintenance documentation. Develop skills in fabrication, sheet metal, hardware installation, corrosion control, composites and safe workshop practices.
Foundations of Aviation Engineering
Start your aviation journey with an introduction to aircraft engineering principles and theory of flight, providing the knowledge needed to succeed throughout your training.
Aircraft Electrical & Avionics
Understand aircraft electrical fundamentals, wiring, electronic systems, instruments and basic avionics. Gain hands-on experience with wiring, testing, fault finding and maintaining aircraft electrical systems.
Aircraft Mechanical Systems
Learn how aircraft structures, flight controls, landing gear, hydraulic, pneumatic, fuel, environmental and powerplant systems operate, and develop the practical skills needed to inspect, maintain and overhaul mechanical components safely.

Programme information
Academy of Learning entry requirements
- 17 years or older at the start of the programme
- Have the right to study in New Zealand, where applicable
- Preferred minimum academic requirements
- Maths, Physics (NCEA Level 2)
- English (NCEA Level 1)
- Strong interest in aviation, aircraft maintenance, engineering, or technical trades
- Student must be able to meet the programme's attendance, safety, and practical learning expectations
Programme Structure & Assessment
This programme combines theory-based learning, practical activities, and assessment to help learners build foundational knowledge and skills for aeronautical engineering environments. Learners will develop knowledge across aircraft maintenance practices, engineering tools and equipment, aircraft systems, maintenance documentation, safe work practices, human factors, and aviation workplace expectations.
The programme is delivered over 36 weeks, across a 39-week period that includes semester breaks (the amount and duration can vary). Learners complete assessments throughout the programme to confirm they have met the required learning outcomes. Assessment may include written or theory-based assessments, practical activities, and other evidence required to demonstrate knowledge and skills.
Qualification Outcome
Successful participants will achieve the New Zealand Certificate in Aeronautical Engineering (Pre-Employment Skills) (Level 3).
This nationally recognised qualification confirms that successful participants have developed foundational knowledge and skills for aeronautical engineering environments. This includes safe work practices, maintenance documentation, aeronautical engineering tools and equipment, aircraft systems, human factors, and current industry practices.
Completion of the programme does not guarantee employment with any specific employer.
