This is a senior, highly visible role where your leadership and technical expertise will lift capability across mobile platforms, unlock innovation, and create meaningful customer impact at scale.
Air New Zealand is on an ambitious digital transformation, and our Digital team sits at the heart of it. You will lead within our mobile engineering chapter, setting direction across iOS and Android, growing people, and embedding best practice to deliver high quality, customer-led mobile experiences.
How you’ll make an impact
- Develop and support chapter members by building common capabilities, coaching for growth, resolving issues, and leading performance reviews and promotion decisions.
- Provide chapter leadership and enable collaboration through thought leadership, knowledge sharing, removing roadblocks, recruiting talent, and inspiring members within the area of expertise.
- Design and develop advanced mobile applications across iOS and Android platforms, including backend-for-frontend solutions that support seamless, reliable customer experiences.
- Collaborate closely with product managers, UI and UX designers, and backend teams to deliver outcomes that balance customer value, speed, and quality.
- Improve application performance, stability, and maintainability across complex, high-traffic mobile environments.
- Lead architectural discussions and contribute to the design of scalable, secure, and high-performance mobile solutions across platforms.
- Stay ahead of emerging iOS and Android technologies, patterns, and standards, translating them into practical improvements for the business.
What we’re looking for
- Extensive experience leading mobile development within complex, customer-facing environments.
- Experience in Android, including Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, with working knowledge of Java.
- Strong iOS capability with experience in Swift and SwiftUI, and the ability to guide technical direction across both platforms.
- Experience with backend-for-frontend development patterns and deployments, with AWS experience an advantage.
- Solid understanding of RESTful APIs, mobile SDKs, and modern integration patterns.
- Demonstrated success in leading and developing high-performing teams.
- Proven ability to lead through influence, mentor senior engineers, and communicate complex technical concepts clearly.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, adaptability, and confidence operating in fast-paced environments, including participation in an on-call roster.
