General Manager (Chapter Area Lead) Software Engineering

As part of the digital transformation of our airline, we have a newly created opportunity for someone to join the business as Chapter Area Lead (General Manager) Software Engineering. Reporting to the Chief Digital Officer, this is an influential leadership role with responsibility for critical capabilities in the organisation.

Key responsibilities: 

  • Lead and manage the Microservices, Web, Mobile, PSS & QIK, and QA chapters/teams of ~150 FTE. 
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key external partners. 
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to drive business objectives. 
  • Empower and enable the team to become experts in their craft and support their career development goals. 
  • Support the development of other teams to practice software engineering crafts, where appropriate. 
  • Develop and implement strategic plans to enhance productivity and performance improvements through quarterly OKRs, and measuring progress via KPIs, such as the DORA metrics. 
  • Manage the policies, standards and guidelines associated with software engineering. 
  • Continue to optimise our existing technology stack: 

- Web: React.js, Next.js, Silverstripe, Playwright 

- Mobile: Swift/SwiftUI, Swift on Server, Kotlin/Jetpack Compose, Appium 

- Backend: Java, Spring Boot, Kafka, REST, Microservices, Domain Driven Design 

- Mainframe: ALCS, z/OS High-Level Assembler 

- Platform: AWS IaaS, Azure DevOps Repos and Pipelines, Kubernetes, IntelliJ IDEA, GitHub Copilot 

  • Continue to champion innovation and our ways of working using modern software engineering techniques, such as: 

- Agile approaches to software engineering 

- Continuous delivery and continuous deployment 

- Platform thinking

- Test driven development for all levels of the test pyramid 

- Multi-craft software engineers and QA engineers (e.g. full stack) 

- Use of generative AI to supercharge productivity 

About you: 

  • 10+ years in large-scale digital leadership roles with a background in software engineering, and/or quality assurance. 
  • Strong understanding of our existing technology stack and agile ways of working. 
  • Previous experience developing and executing strategic plans in line with business goals. 
  • Proven experience leading and developing large teams, with the ability to motivate and inspire. 
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders. 
  • A curious mind with an interest in emerging technologies and market trends.
