Senior Operational Safety Lead Flight

We have an exciting opportunity for an Air New Zealander to join the Operational Safety team in the role Senior Operational Safety Lead - Flight.  This is a safety leadership role and an essential part of our airline Safety Management System (SMS). 

Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About the role

The role sits within Operational Safety, a 'Centre of Excellence' (CoE) comprised of skilled safety specialists who are focused on the safe enablement of our business outcomes.  Our activities include safety investigation, safety audit, SMS enablement, risk management, safety intelligence and reporting, and safety promotion. We are part of the wider Operational Integrity & Safety (OI&S) CoE which promotes and supports the safety, health, and security of our people and operations, to ensure safe journeys for our customers. 

The Senior Operational Safety Lead - Flight reports to the Operational Integrity and Assurance Manager - Investigations and is responsible for leading the flight operations safety team.  As a leader, you will ensure the delivery of safety investigations and other assurance activities, such as audits, safety promotion, education etc. to support continual safety improvement within the Airline, whilst ensuring the airline's exposition and regulatory requirements are met.  This role is pivotal in promoting our Just Culture principals, identifying opportunities for safety improvement, and contributing to our overall management of safety risk to prevent future accident or harm events.

The successful candidate will lead a team of Safety Specialists with a focus on their safety investigation craft, development, wellbeing, and execution of safety investigation responsibilities in accordance with standards and best practice.  The focus of the team is flight operations related occurrence investigations, but they will also conduct audits and investigations in other operational areas as needed.

We are looking for a leader with the ability to motivate a team and to influence and enable others to safely achieve their business outcomes. The following attributes are essential:

  • Aviation safety investigation qualifications or equivalent training
  • Advanced knowledge of SMS and its application in practice
  • Experience in leading aviation safety investigations at an airline level
  • Extensive aviation experience, ideally in airline flight operations involving large aircraft
  • Strong leadership qualities and a desire to promote and deliver high standards of work
  • Experience in fostering constructive relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, including senior leaders, front-line personnel, unions, and regulators
  • Proven record of systems thinking and continuous improvement practices
  • Aviation auditing skills and experience preferred, but not essential.
