Workplace Relations Specialist

Air New Zealand has an opportunity for a pragmatic and experienced employment lawyer to join our Workplace Relations team on a fixed term basis to cover parental leave for 14 months.   

As a Workplace Relations Specialist ('People Specialist'), you would be part of our broader People function and would report to the People Lead – Workplace Relations. In this role, you will work closely with the business and our human resources business partners to provide employment related legal solutions that deliver on our strategy to ensuring constructive and sustainable workplace relationships.   

Key responsibilities: 

  • Partner with business leaders and human resources business partners to create sustainable solutions on employee matters 
  • Managing higher risk / complex workplace relations matters including disciplinary management, workplace investigations, and restructuring  
  • Manage external legal advice and cost 
  • Provide litigation support and strategy with external legal advisors 
  • Provide legal support in relation to collective bargaining including attending mediation, and facilitation on behalf of Air New Zealand 
  • Actively participating in projects to develop new processes and process improvements 
  • Build and maintain high-quality relationships with key internal and external stakeholders. 

Qualifications and experience:

  • LLB degree or higher. 
  • Admitted to practice in New Zealand (equivalency may be considered). 
  • A current New Zealand Practising Certificate (equivalency may be considered). 
  • Mid to senior level lawyer with in-depth working knowledge of New Zealand employment law. 
  • Proven previous experience of managing and advising on workplace relations issues, preferably within a collectivised environment. 

Skills: 

  • Strong partnering skills both with the business and with the wider People team with the ability to understand stakeholder aims and drivers. 
  • Demonstrable track record in producing tailored and practical advice that meets our strategic, relationship and commercial aims. 
  • Ability to identify and mitigate employment-related legal and business risks. 
  • Proven experience in building and developing relationships with team members and stakeholders. 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to influence and collaborate at all levels.
