Careers in Airport Operations - Hepa's Story

01 Aug 2018 Airport & Airline Operations, Our People

Hepa Topia joined the Air New Zealand whānau in 2016. He is currently working in the baggage team at the Auckland International Terminal.

I began my career at Air New Zealand as a baggage handler in 2016. I say career because I don’t see myself leaving a world-renowned company that not only looks after its customers but also its staff any time soon.

My first day on shift was a little daunting, loading and unloading tonnes of bags. If I’m honest, I did ask myself that day whether it I was up for the job and if it was truly for me. But after a while everything just clicked and I’ve not looked back.

The training and support I have had and continue to receive is something I’ve not had in past jobs. It feels like a family. Today when I see our new recruits who may well be asking themselves the same questions I did on day one, I tell them “It’s going to get easier, don’t be afraid to ask for help, you’ll be good!”

My days are never the same. The personal growth and opportunities I have received makes for a promising future. To date I’ve had roles from baggage handling and baggage assistant to backup foreman, and I’m currently preparing to join an emerging leaders course. The career opportunities are endless and I’m excited to see what’s next. Customer service, load control, ramp services and resources are just some of the business areas I could consider.

I love the working environment Air New Zealand promotes. Our Executive team acknowledges that our people are what set our company apart and I feel privileged and blessed to be one of them.
