Senon Pinto is in his first year of the Air New Zealand Engineering Graduate Programme and shares his career journey so far.

When I was five, I stepped into a cockpit of a Boeing 747 and was overwhelmed by the buttons, lights and screens. From that day onwards, I could not imagine life without aviation. Fast forward some years and I’m living the dream, working for one of the best airlines in the world!

I recently graduated from AUT with a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical, Hons) and currently work as a Graduate Engineer under the Air New Zealand Engineering Graduate Programme.

This programme is allowing me to experience all that Air New Zealand has to offer as I get to immerse myself in various parts of the business (both in engineering and beyond) through regular rotations. Personally, one of the best features of the programme is the mentor and programme co-ordinator I have regular access to.

Being the new kid on the block is never easy, but every person I’ve met so far has made me feel part of the family. The people at Air New Zealand are some of the most passionate, knowledgeable and helpful people I’ve ever met. I can see why it is one of the most coveted companies to work for.

In my short time at Air New Zealand, I have had the opportunity to contribute to a project, explore ways to improve business processes, and provide technical instructions and assessments on aircraft. I have also learnt a great deal in a small space of time, from aviation rules and regulations to aircraft design, each day is an opportunity for me to learn from the very best in the industry.

As a graduate, career progression is very important to me. At Air New Zealand, my experience has been really rewarding so far and I can see a variety of career pathways ahead for my development focus. Even though I’m still finding my feet in this company, I’m excited to see what the future has in store for me!
